Bird Feeder Pepper

By Shaun Inman

Your RSS and Atom feeds attract all kinds of colorful wildlife, Bird Feeder is a window onto that activity. It highlights subscription trends across multiple Feeds and clicks on individual Seeds. What’s a seed? That’s bird-ese for an article or link within a feed. Poo-tee-weet?

Release Notes

Latest version
Version 2.06
  • added an embeddable template-based subscriber count widget, see the updated README.txt for details
  • updated unique reader checksum calculation to better report on subscriber counts from web-based readers
Version 2.05
  • Fixed bug when saving non-standard Feeder Locations
  • Added some additional readers
Version 2.04
  • Seeds now respect the “Ignore my visits” preference
  • Added MintReferredByFeed session cookie (and the referred_by_feed column) for use by other Pepper and external systems (eg. can be used to hide ads on your site from subscribers)

It has come to my attention that giving your feed a BIRDFEED name with an apostrophe can cause Bird Feeder to behave erratically (its filters not functioning as expected and being unable to delete the feed with the apostrophe) and could potentially result in Mint data loss or corruption. I am looking into the issue. In the meantime don’t assign a feed name containing an apostrophe.

Version 2.03

You may see an increase in subscribers for the first 24 hours after updating. This is normal and part of the update. Subscriber counts will be accurate thereafter.

  • Updated ingredients of the reader_checksum again (to prevent a request for www.domain.com/feed/ from overwriting the subscriber counts from a separate request for the otherwise identical domain.com/feed/)
  • Added FeedBlitz, Google Desktop, Megite and Newshutch to recognized reader/bots (previously included under “Unknown”)
Version 2.02
  • Added the REQUEST_URI to the ingredients of the reader_checksum (to prevent a request for /feed/index.php from overwriting the subscriber counts from a separate request for the otherwise identical /feed/)
  • Thanks for the suggestion Ronald.
Version 2.01
  • Added Google Reader to the list of recognized Feed Readers
  • Updated the Feeder to provide configuration feedback (good or bad to avoid “blank page” confusion)
Version 2.0
  • Initial release
