Pageviews of one session counted as unique visits?

Is anyone getting pageviews of one session counted as unique visits?

In Secret Crushes I have one person visiting and viewing 50+ pages within 15 minutes, but each pageview shows up as a new unique visit. Then the next day, they’ll view another 10+ pages, but it’ll all be grouped under the same IP. It really skews my daily averages cause it counts as 50+ uniques, instead of one.

The reverse happens for me as well. Someone will show up one day and the pageviews will all be grouped as one session, but on the day after, all pageviews will be counted as separately unique (even though session is short).

It’s also sporadic sometimes; one session of 10+ pageviews, will have 3 grouped in one session, and 7 grouped in another, even though it’s all within 3 minutes.

Anyone have an explanation for this?

I’ve noticed this too.

I’ve also noticed that FF seems to keep everything in one session but both Opera & IE 6 do a unique for each page view … Well on this test box anyway… Then with IE 7 on another box going through the same Squid proxy each page view is unique.

Something weird going on with the cookies I think …

I think I’ve found the problem with my setup. It appears that the time on the server is 3hours behind…

trying to set the right time, but something weird is going on with the timezones…

Yeap!! Make sure the time is correct on your server!

Mine was out by three hours. as the cookie time outs are set based on the time on the server it needs to be correct!

My timezone appears to be correct, but I’m still having this problem.

Here’s an example: mint sessions

As you can tell, the latest session should be grouped as one, but it’s separated into two. I can’t figure out the common thread that may be causing this, it happens to different people, but it doesn’t happen to them all the time.

One thing I also figured out is that even though they aren’t grouped as one session in crushes, visits will still count them as 1 unique visit (I was wrong above in saying that it skews my daily averages).

well if your time is all correct on the server maybe the clients time is wrong. If it is then the browser will be expiring the cookies and new ones will be created.

Get it?

Here’s a different example:

Mint sessions 2

The highlighted visits (around 50+ total) are all from a single 15 minute session, but each pageview is counted as an individual visit instead of being grouped into one. If this is an expiring cookie issue, I would expect the sessions to be grouped after a while. I also wouldn’t expect it to happen with the frequency that it does if the time is wrong once a day.

Yeah its weird, but since this is all based around a cookie and time of the cookie - its hard to figure out. Maybe its nothing to do with the cookie, the only way to find out is put a pc on the wrong time fire up FF w/ Live HTTP headers and see what happens….

Any news on this issue, or anyone experiencing the same thing? I’m still getting occurrences of this strange behaviour.

This problem is much less frequent now (used to be once a week), but still happens on occasion (once a month). Thought I’d bring up this thread to see if anyone has begun experience this issue, or if there’s been any development on a solution.

An example from this morning:

I still haven’t encountered this problem and as a result haven’t been able to observe and identify a cause or prescribe a solution.

I was having the same problem, I just dropped the tables from the database and installed fresh again and it seems to be working properly now. Sucks I lost all that old data though.
