Unique Visitors Discrepancy

I have a weird thing happening today in Mint 2.1.

In the Visits Panel at 6pm tonight we had 176 unique visitors, yet in the Today panel we have had a Total of 86 visitor on our site.

Any suggestions?

That’s easily explained. Unique visitors are specific to the given timeframe. (For the sake of simplicity of this example assume that there are only two hours in the day.):

Say you have 5 unique visitors at 4pm. Three of those visitors return at 5pm plus an additional 2 new uniques. All five of the most recent visitors are unique to 5pm (even though three of them visited earlier at 4pm) but you only had 7 unique visitors for the 2 hour day.

Uniques in larger timeframes are not necessarily equal to the sum of the uniques in the timeframes they contain.

Ok I just opened up IE6 to make sure things are rocking (VM running through squid proxy on a non “don’t count me ip”).

Every page I visted adds +1 to unique & total for the Hour. But the daily total is updated +1 and the unique stays the +0

Is that suppose to happen?

Unique doesn’t seem to add up totals properly either (I installed Mint 8 hours ago)

-When- -Total- -Unique-
Jun '07 378 100
Today 378 111
This Week 378 111
This Month 378 100

Shouldn’t all those unique’s be the same? If there have been 111 today, today is this week which is this month right?

Figures this out - the time on the server was out of sync (3 hours, 12mins behind).

Once that sorted out it seems to be all good now.
