Curious feed numbers

I have both my Atom and RSS feed named the same thing in Bird Feeder, so they’re coming up together as just one entry in the Feeds pane. There seems to be something funny going on with the tracking, however, as I’m getting quite different subscription numbers every second day. Here’s a shot of my Feed pane: http://philipj.biocurious.com/weirdFeeds.png

Anyone seeing anything similar occurring, or is there any reason why this should happen?

Unfortunately, that’s normal. The problem occurs with these services which aggregate feeds for numerous subscribers. They tend to have a caching mechanism and only update your feed based on an algorithm which determines how often you update.

The biggest culprit is usually Bloglines, but Google Reader has been known to do it too. If you pay attention to the Readers section of UA007 you can see exactly when those services fetched your feed within the last 24 hours. On the days your subscription count is low, I guarantee Bloglines and Google Reader will be missing from the pane or have little to no subscribers.
