Warning: Using seed tracking apparently breaks Technorati

This is probably going to be a long message, but, I’ve been using the Seed tracking of the Bird Feeder pepper on my site for about a month now and have run into a very unfortunate problem with Technorati. Since implementing the Seed tracking, Technorati has not been able to index my content.

I’ve sent several emails back and forth with Technorati support about this issue and still haven’t come to any resolution (although I think we’re close and I’ll post about it when I’ve finally got it). What they’ve told me is that Technorati has trouble when your RSS feed uses different URLs for your posts than the URLs used on your site’s actual home page.

I’ve made sure my RSS feed is valid, but still I haven’t had any luck and couldn’t understand why this was causing problems. People who use FeedBurner to track their RSS click-throughs have no problem getting their content indexed.

Today I got an answer as to why that is: Technorati has special code that allows for that functionality specifically for FeedBurner because so many people use FeedBurner.

So, with all that said, the point of my message is 2-fold:

  1. I’m hoping that Shaun, you’ll take not of this and see if you can use your powers to maybe get Technorati to accommodate Mint’s BirdFeeder (like they do for FeedBurner). I’m not sure if you can or not, but I thought it was worth a try to ask.
  2. To warn other Mint users that if your content isn’t getting indexed on Technorati lately, this is could be the reason.

Has anyone else run into issues like this? Or does anyone have any insight?

I’ve noticed my content has failed to be indexed by Technorati also. I emailed them, but they have yet to get back to me. I did suspect BirdFeeder, so I’m at least relieved that’s the problem.

I definitely think Technorati should consider supporting BirdFeeder. I’m sure there are at least a large enough number of people using it for Technorati to consider this worthwhile. After all, they’re loosing out on the data of those blogs.

I second a vote for Shaun contacting them. He would be the best person to deal with the issue compared to a number of random users.

I’d be right there with the both of you if my use of Bird Feeder didn’t work so darn well with Technorati. I made sure all of them worked with the feed validator, even with Bird Feeder, and some odd configurations. [?]

There’s also the issue of showing up in the Technorati index. I’ve got posts that link to stuff (as is my wont in life), and it almost always shows up as me linking to those other sites. Rarely, the links show up in searches. I have no idea why that happens, but at least the link-ed are getting the benefit of the linky love, besides that MacStansburyalanche.

For no apparent reason, the cache that shows up on your individual blog pages will mess up, and they can clear that out and your site should start indexing again. Then again, Technorati is a fickle beast, and you have to make sure that a lot of things are working correctly for your site to get indexed correctly:

  • Your page must validate
  • Your feed must validate
  • You must use tags in a standard, discoverable way

And, I think…

  • The gods must accept your sacrifice

None of them plants, people. Kosher meats, that’s how you get indexed.

Long story short, Bird Feeder probably isn’t the only thing messing up your site getting indexed, nor is there anything you’ve done that would mess it up. It could be a Technorati problem.

I’ve switched my feed back to what I was using before (ie, without seed tracking) and Technorati has indexed my content just fine.

I’m not sure if I’d rather use BirdFeeder or FeedBurner on a long-term basis, but at this point I’ve switched back to FeedBurner until I can figure out why Technorati and BirdFeeder just won’t play nice.

I started a discussion over at the Technorati forums. Hopefully that will get some notice.

Thanks for emailing Technorati. I just received a response to my forum thread:

hi cavemonkey50,

yes, we initially had some redirection problems with feedburner feeds.

I’m sure we have a similar problem here…we’re looking into your specific situation regarding mint, as well as building some tools to avoid such things in the future. sorry for any inconvenience this may be causing you (and your blog).

Thanks Shaun

I’ve heard nothing back from Technorati. How about you Ronald?
