Bird Feeder and WordPress Feed Miscount

Something odd is happening with Bird Feeder and my WordPress feeds.

I reset Bird Feeder’s stats six hours ago, about a day after moving the Bird Feeder code as suggested. Currently, Bird Feeder is reporting 33 subscribers to the main feed today and a whopping 208 to the comments feed, and the Reader’s tab is reporting a whopping 89% unknown readers, which is more than likely a related issue.

I did notice similarly inflated numbers for the comments feed before moving the code as mentioned above, but didn’t bother to record anything.

The problem is that Mint is reporting 208 comments feed subscribers in the past six hours while my server access logs is only reporting 23 requests for the comments feed in the past twenty-four hours. And, Mint is reporting only 33 main feed subscribers in the past six hours while my server access log is reporting 173 requests for the main feed in the past six hours.

Please note that neither of my server access log counts take into account unique vs. returning visitors.

I’m using WordPress v2.0.9, Mint v2.03, and Bird Feeder v2.02.

Can you email me the relevant feed requests from your logs? Without seeing the actual data I’d only be guessing as to what the source of the problem is.

I am on Mint 2.0 with BirdFeeder 2.02 and using the WordPress birdfeeder plugin from http://freepressblog.org/wordpress-plug … ess-plugin and am seeing abnormal (read: way too many) subscribers show up in Mint. My blog has about 40 subscribers via my feedburner feed, and I’ve been promoting that one as the primary feed for awhile so I do not believe I have very many direct subs. Any suggestions?

Thanks for responding, Shaun! I have sent as much relevant data as I could via the contact form.

FWIW I am also using Mint 2.0 and BF 2.02 on Wordpress with the plugin and seeing a high number of subscribers in the pepper compared to Feedburner stats.

I run mint on a subdomain, I’ve gone as far as setting up a duplicate install just for feeder. I’ve tried the plugin - for some reason mint seems to track it, even though it breaks my feeds.

I’ve followed this forum off an on for a while, and nothings working. this has been the case for the past 3-4 versions of wordpress.

is this something that will ever be fixed or is it time to admit defeat on this issue? If so does any one know of any good software to track everything (including feeds) with?

After alot of hair pulling and a few beers i’ve finally got feeds working.

add

to the very bottom of the feed file in wp-includes

amazing what you figure out when your pissed off :)

same here, abnormal count of feeds. mint 2.1.2 and wordpress 2.2.2, I get a whopping 300+now when in feedburner I had around 60…

I should add I had this problem with the “Bird Feeder WordPress Plugin”. I am now trying the ‘BirdFeederWP’ and will report results. I am probably being pedantic here but there is a little mishap in the peppermill where the former is reported as being version 2.0 (which can lead to think of a very stable and bugless plugin) when in fact it is stated on its website it is a version 0.8 — also, the manual instructions for the birdfeeder in its readme file are confusing for WP users since - at least with WP 2.2.2 — the link elements to be edited are in different files as indicated ( and even with the right files I personally couldn’t get that to work anyway…)

OK, at least with my WP 2.2.2 I am fairly sure that birdfeeder miscounts.

The feed stats are way to high. In general, all the results with mint seems a little to high sometimes, but with the feeds is beyond reasonable. I am running a feed statistic plugin for wordpress and the stats are like one fourth less.

Just consider this:

  • I reset mint statistics emptying all the tables.
  • I wait ten minutes and I get 7 counts of rss2 (on feedburner I used to get 60 a day on that feed)
  • According to User Agent, 100% of them 7 uses firefox 2.0.0.6

wha?!

=> something isn’t working right…
