for example in mint, facebook’s url will display like this…
http%3A//www.facebook.com
where %3A is the HEX value for a colon (:)
Problem seems confined to colons (%3A), spaces (%20), and pipes (%7C), but may be other characters too.
What do I need to do to solve this issue?

That was the solution to the issue. I had a htacces rule rewriting non www urls with www. I changed my rule and everything is now working great!
