Panes randomly vanishing after upgrade to mint 2.

Hey all, I just upgraded to Mint 2 yesterday. I’m liking it so far, but I’ve been having some weird issues with panes from various peppers vanishing permanently.

First, I moved the XXX Strong Mint pane into the “disabled” area, and it vanished from the viewing area as expected. However, when I went back into preferences, the pane was nowhere to be found! (I expected to find it listed under “disabled”.)

I installed the “Trends” pepper, and although I expected two panes to show up (internal and external), only one did until after I uninstalled/reinstalled the pepper.

Also, when I uninstalled/reinstalled XXX Strong Mint, two identical copies of its pane showed up!

Now, although I haven’t messed with it at all, the User Agent 007 pane has completely vanished. I already uninstalled/reinstalled it, knowing I’d lose all my user agent statistics.

At the moment, all the panes I expect to be there are there, but only after a melee of uninstalling/reinstalling and massive data loss.

Mint 2 looks great, but from a purely functionality-oriented standpoint it feels very rushed. I was very pleased with the polished and reliable feature-set of Mint 1.2, but I’m not sure if I should regret my $19 upgrade to Mint 2 or not. :-/

If Mint 2 was anything it was not rushed. What version were you updating from?

I was just trying to convey my vaguely-frustrated feelings. Poor choice of words on my part. :-P

As for the version, it was mint 1.29.

It looks like you still have ghost pane in your configuration. When you upgraded did you forget to copy over any Pepper from your previous installation and see one of those yellow error messages?

At first, it wasn’t clear to me if 1.X peppers would be compatible with mint 2, so (at first) I left them out of the tree. Then, when I got the yellow messages, I obeyed them. (Ie, copied in each pepper that it complained about.)

Is there a way I can identify the glitch in the database and execute a query to fix it? (I’m not unfamiliar with SQL, and I’m at home at the mysql prompt, so just let me know.)

No, it’s not that easy. The config data is stored in a serialized PHP array. I think I have a script laying about that rebuilds the pane order array. I’ll dig it up and post back here shortly.

Actually, I was mis-reading your paneOrder array. Everything seems to be in order now. Sorry for the mis-information. It’s just been one of those weeks.

So you think maybe it was a bug/conflict with some older pepper? I ended up yanking several peppers from my overall configuration…

Still, no one pepper was being problematic - they were getting mixed up and a lot of different ones were acting up.

Okay, I haven’t been able to find the cause of this problem (it could have been a conflict with an older Pepper) but I’ve put together a script to rebuild Mint’s internal pane lookup, fixing the problem of disappearing panes. You will need to reorder your panes to your liking afterwards but they will all be there.

I would recommend making a full backup of your Mint database using the Backup/Restore Pepper in the Preferences (just in case). Unzip and upload the script to the root of your Mint directory and visit:

yourdomain.com/mint/rebuild-panes.php

Then proceed to reorder your panes. Should something go wrong (there is very little chance of that happening) you can restore from your recent backup, again using the Backup/Restore Pepper.

Thanks for you patience with this everyone.
