[Pepper] Little Flutter (Version 0.5)

Everyone knows that one of the biggest joys of Mint is checking your stats every 3 seconds. But what happens if you’re on the bus? At your Aunties house? Stuck in a queue? Little Flutter solves this problem giving you a little chunk of minty goodness, anywhere, viewable using any mobile browser.

Little Flutter currently allows you to view your total hits, and hits for today, this week and this month.

Release History

  • 9th Feb 2007: 0.5 - Initial Release

Tested/Supported Mobile Browsers

  • Standard Browser on k800i (Orange, UK)
Notes: Has good support for the handheld styles and displays well in this browser.
  • Opera Mini 3 on k800i (Orange, UK)
Notes: No support for tables, it seems that, although the handheld styles appear to be loaded they do not override other styles.

Known Issues

  • Extra white space: a line of extra white space is displayed for each pane you have shown, I am looking into fixing this.

Todo

  • Adjust display code to use Shaun’s generateTable().
  • Move CSS to external file (possibly).
  • Add more stats, probably last five searches and last five referrers.
  • Hide the pane when viewed on a desktop browser (possibly).

Questions

When the panes are rendered each is given an ID like #pane-7 is there anyway to get this ID inside a pepper so I can use it to make more specific CSS rules?

Please try out this pepper and let me know how it works in your mobile web browser, I will try and sort out a screenshot tomorrow but you should only see the mint header, one panel with a header row and 4 rows of stats and the mint copyright footer, anything else should be hidden by the handheld CSS. Any screenshots or feedback that you can give would be really useful to the development of this pepper. Thanks in advance!

I’ve installed your pepper, but I don’t understand how to use it … The Flutter - panel shows up in Mint, but there are no stats inside.

Is there a special URL to go to on my mobile? All the panels show up on my phone (I’m using a Nokia 6630 & Opera, btw.), but they’re not smaller or anything …

Thanks!

regards, Joerg

Thanks for having a go Japhy, there is no special URL to go to, just browse to your mint install using your mobile device.

This is the reason I need help testing it, because mobile browsers vary so much there is no way I can buy a handset to test every phone!

Little Flutter allows you to view stats on a device which does not support javascript. When you view the pepper using a desktop browser I have hidden the stats as they are just taken from the default pepper.

When you look at Mint on your phone do the other panels show stats or are they empty? Is there any chance I can have a look at your mint install in client mode?

Worked from my Windows Mobile 4 phone. I wish however that all the other panes didn’t show up empty when loading mint. Is there any way to make this pepper add a directory like site.com/mint/mini or something and that site would have just the mobile stats?

Thanks for testing orfilms, there are handheld styles which should hide the empty panes but they only work if your browser supports them.

I will have a look to see if I could implement something like site.com/mint/?mobile which is the same way Shaun handles the preferences, though I don’t know if it is possible for a pepper to define these.

Thanks again for taking the time to test my pepper!

Here’s are some screenshot taken from my Nokia 6630, running Opera (not Opera Mini!): japhy.at/6630/littleflutter1.jpg japhy.at/6630/littleflutter2.jpg japhy.at/6630/littleflutter2.jpg

(couldn’t find the correct markup - code to insert the pictures here…)

JavaScript is deactivated (Opera is capable of JS).

As you can see, the width of my screen is to small to show the whole panel without scrolling …

regards, Joerg

Thanks for the screenshots Japhy its a great help, I think the way to go is to serve a totally custom mobile version, i’m looking into this. For the time being I posted a screenshot on my flickr account, so you can see what Little Flutter should look like, and hopefully will do for you soon!

I have also written a blog post so I can keep all the latest information about the pepper together in one place.

Great! I’ve waited for such a pepper. I think it’s really better to do a custom version for mobiles, showing only the important stats. Although Opera is capable of JavaScript, it’s not really an option to load the default mint - page on my phone since it takes an awful lot of time.

Thanks! I’m looking forward to this one!

I love mint but I’ve always needed to have access to stats on my windows mobile phone. So I’ve had 2 stat programs until now. I would love to get rid of the second stat program. I just wish the the next version of little flutter contain more stats (is all the stats provided by the default pepers too much to ask for??? lol). If you can do this I’m sure a lot of people will find use of your plugin
