Google Desktop Gadget - Alpha testers wanted

I’ve whipped up a Google gadget for Mint. Before I submit it to the Google Desktop repository, I thought some of you might want to help me debug it and test it on different machines (Macs included).

This is an alpha version of the gadget. What does that mean? It means it works on my computer, and that’s about the extent of the testing I’ve done. So it may or may not work on your computer, and of course I make no warranty or claim that it will work, nor do I take responsibility for anything bad that happens as a result of installing/using it. You know the shpeal. :)

That said, the brave can download it at: http://www.speedpixel.com/download/file/Mint.gg

It’s not as pretty as the Yahoo widget, but my goal was to keep it compact and informative (i.e. give all the data that can be pulled via the API). Please reply to this thread with feedback.

I just posted a new version. For those who have downloaded it already, I would recommend downloading the new version.

v0.2 Change Log:

  • Clicking on the display rotates between the “Ever”, “Today” and “This Hour” screens, as the other widgets do (from what I read)

  • Switching screens also changes the numbers shown in the title bar, so you can still see the info if you have the widget collapsed.

  • Google Desktop Alerts enabled, with regular old Javascript Alerts as a fallback (to enable the Desktop Alerts, right-click on the deskbar itself (or on the Google logo), click “Configure Gadgets”, then “Enable Alerts” for the Mint for GD item).

  • I think I fixed a bug that occurred when your computer was online, but the website was down (this is difficult for me to test, so please let me know if you get any errors, and exactly what the error says if you do get any errors)

I also confirmed that the widget works on Google Gadgets for Linux (see http://code.google.com/p/google-gadgets-for-linux ). I haven’t tested the Mac version, though reason stands that if it worked on Linux, it should work on Mac.

You can download the new version using the same URL found in the first post.

Version 0.3 has just been created, and can be downloaded here: speedpixel.com/download/file/Mint.gg

Since I’ve been running it for a little over a week on my computer with very few bugs (which I think I’ve squashed by now), I’m considering this BETA instead of alpha. Also, the lack of response from anyone is encouraging (no news is good news, right?). I’d still like to hear any kind of feedback, good or bad.

This latest version adds a button to the UI that shows when it’s downloading data from Mint, and when clicked it’ll force the gadget to check Mint for new data immediately. It also uses a neat “fade” transition between pages to pretty it up a bit.

v0.3

  • Added “refresh” button, which rotates when data is being fetched

  • Added fade transition between pages

  • Disabled alerts (they were being problemmatic on an un-attended computer)

  • Enable error message buffer and show error icon instead of the “refresh” icon

I’ve open-sourced this project, and can now be accessed at: http://code.google.com/p/mint-for-google-desktop

I haven’t had any problems with it, and have received zero feedback, so I’ll call this done.
