Till, can I throw in a feature request? Previous download Peppers never had the option to remove downloads that I no longer wanted tracked. I frequently release downloads with version numbers, and would love the option to remove the file from the download list once the file has been removed.

Actually, I found that Google Anaylitcs tracks downloads by adding a small JavaScript tag to the download link. When clicked, it kicks off the JavaScript which sends the response back to Google (or SkyNet as I like to call them). Seems like a reasonable idea to keep from having to scan any Apache logs, which would involve a significant amount of disk I/O.

Just a thought :) Otherwise I have been quite impressed with Mint. It does just about everything Urchin and GA both do, at a fraction of the cost, and without having to bow down to the Google.

Ronald Heft, mhh I’ll include such a script.

I wrote the basics and its working.
If you want to help me getting the pepper working by testing it, drop me a line. You know my name and my domain is pralinenschachtel.de. It’s exactly what you’d think it is.
I’ll send you the pepper and instructions in the next few days.

My downloads are currently formatted thus: http://automatorworld.com/?dl=dashboarder.zip

So however the pepper can work to facilitate this would of course be preferable to me :)

As an aside: if there was a way to leverage this data back into our sites it would be astounding (that is, hook into the data to display top ten download counts, counts per file, etc).

I think the Pepper will be ready to use until next weekend.

Hey .. found this link while trying to get downloads to work.

Basically, I’m loading SWF files in a lightbox frame. I’d like to be able to track how many times they have been downloaded without resorting to parsing an access_log file myself.

Any Ideas?

I don’t have access to .htaccess on this host (but do have a /stats/access_log) file…

Thanks, John
