I paused before clicking “upgrade” but it’s just too cool. I had actually stopped using Mint and was thinking of uninstalling it and then saw the little update icon on the top left of my screen. I don’t know much about software pricing but I looked to see how much a full version of Windows XP Pro was: $249.99, and an upgrade version is: $179.99. So, I’d say he’s got just about the right ratio as other upgrades out there. Office 2003 is about the same. Upgrades are usually around 30% - 32% off full versions. Mint is 33%, so it’s on track and is cooler and more usable than most other $20 investments I make (like that pizza I bought last night). Okay, too much analysis, I know, but just wanted to offer a market comparison. I can’t help it. I’m a consultant.
Price Upgrade 19$?
I dont know and am undecided. Mint was very helpful, but I just did not get really into the program. Personally I see what a lot of people are saying about running personal sites, as mine is. I run 3 sites but could only afford a license for my main one.
I may upgrade, but hey after my monitizing pays for the domain and server, there is not much left in the warchest.
Come on Ryan, 19USD is only like 5 squid nowadays.
It’s 10 quid, and for all my sites that’d be over 55 quid. Not including the original pre-upgrade cost.
It’s all well and good for one show wonders, but once you get into the territory of running a few sites the per-website pricing and upgrade scheme becomes very dear for what you’re actually getting.
It’s like having to buy a mobile phone every time you go into a different town: completely for your own use, but charged up the arse for using it in multiple places.
I can see how running Mint on multiple sites can get costly. I had no issues upgrading — I did it almost right away — but would probably have thought about it a lot more if I was running Mint on several sites.
Has Shaun commented at all about this? I sent him an email within a few hours of the Mint 2 release and there are two threads about upgrade pricing, but nothing from Shaun.
At least I hacked the Junior Mint 1 widget so that I don’t have to stare at the update available badge that was blocking my stats.
As I said in the other thread:
You guys are entitled to your opinion. You think Mint 2 is just a skin? Fine, that’s your opinion.
You’re also entitled to continue using Mint 1. End of discussion as far as I’m concerned.
