Forum Software

I need to install forum software for my business.

I am also leaning towards bbpress. Vbulletin is the backup, but it seems to have too much horsepower for what I need and I trust Wordpress will improve BBpress. I also like the tags of BBpress as it meshes well with the way I use tags on my site. Any strong opinions here?

  • Cost not an issue
  • Wordpress account integration/mgmt integration a plus
  • These are private forums. Security is important.
  • Need RSS support with authentication

Am I making a mistake going with BBPress or should I follow the herd and go with VBulletin?

Go with Vanilla! Or if you REALLY need bloated forum software get IPB instead of Vbulletin.

If only Shaun would package up this beast.. there goes another $30!!

I’m going to have to agree with Vanilla. It took my users a bit longer to “figure out” the simplicity of it (“you mean I don’t have to click through three pages to post a comment?”), but they absolutely love it now.

WP integration is not out-of-the-box, but he keeps his authentication model pretty extensible and I’m sure you can find a tutorial that is WP-specific.

I am using BBPress and it works well. I wish the development had more resources on it but the software is in a good state right now.
