Mint performance hit?

Hi guys,

I’m considering purchasing Mint for use on an online store. I just have some concerns about the performance hit I may incur, and my forum searches have turned up pretty dry.

I’m more concerned about the client-side performance hit than the hit to the server, but information about the server processing requirements would be nice too.

How big is the Javascript download? Does it take much time to execute? I wonder because we’re trying to keep our page sizes as trim as possible (we have an AJAX component on every page and that tends to bloat the download size, so I need to consider every addition carefully).

TIA for any replies.

Well, I guess I asked a tough question or something. Fortunately, I have the tools to answer it for myself, and the results are quite favorable.

It looks to me, based on an inspection of haveamint.com, that Mint uses two Javascript includes: one with some bookkeeping code, and another that is basically just a get-style query to the Mint server-side script. The first weighs 4.1 K, and the second a whopping 0.01 K.

So there you have it; the performance hit due to downloading the Javascript includes is pretty much negligible. Turns out the server-side hit is probably more important, as I bet that second query script will block page loading until the server-side script returns. This seems to be supported by the reported response time of ~400ms for that 0.01k file.

But, all in all, I think Mint has a very minimal impact on the pages it tracks. I will probably purchase a license when I get closer to launching my site, since it looks like a fantastic product.

I just have to ask, though, can anyone confirm or deny my conclusions?

Your analysis is correct. As has been said (many times in this Forum) Mint performance is directly related to the performance of your web and database servers. If you have a overworked database Mint is going to be sluggish. If your web server is slow to respond to page requests, Mint is going to be sluggish.

If you have a healthy server then you should have nothing to worry about.

In addtion to what Shaun has said, I can confirm that we use it on our e-commerce site and have had no issues with page load times, Mint works impeccably. Just make sure you use it for what it’s designed for i.e a fresh view, don’t store too much data and it should be fine.

As has been said (many times in this Forum)

Sorry for asking a FAQ (maybe it should go in the official FAQ?); as I said I felt I’d done due dilligence in searching, and came up dry. Thanks for replying anyway.
